CBT, which is short for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a treatment that combines Cognitive Therapy - looking at what people think - and Behavioral Therapy - looking at what they do. CBT is based on the notion that the way we think about situations can have a significant impact on our feelings and behaviors - a cycle of thought feelings and behavior is created and that by changing how people think, we can change the way they feel and act. In reality, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a very practical form of psychotherapy that offers people the opportunity to focus on their goals and on current issues that may be affecting their lives today. It is used to help people gain control over their thoughts and behaviors, which can help them manage and overcome various mental health issues. It teaches coping skills for dealing with different problems by breaking those thoughts, feelings and behaviors cycle.

There were, however, individuals who did not achieve significant benefits with Standard Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and required a more focused approach. Typically, these patients were suffering from personality disorders as a result of complex psychological traumas and a neglect of their emotional needs when they were young. Jeffry Young, a pioneer in cognitive behavioral therapy, developed Schema Therapy as a method for modifying cognitive behavioral therapy for patients who did not achieve the same benefits as he had hoped with standard CBT. Schema therapy combines elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, Gestalt therapy, Attachment Theory and related approaches. Schema therapy focuses on identifying maladaptive patterns of behavior and thinking (schemas) that are often developed in childhood and maintained into adulthood. By addressing these schemas, the individual can develop more adaptive and healthier behaviors. The goal is to help clients identify their maladaptive schemas, their core beliefs and feelings associated with them, and to restructure their thought patterns and behaviors in order to better cope with life's challenges.
